Study Revealed Warm Sitz Bath Not Beneficial In Post Hemorrhoidectomy

Published by admin under Health Information

Warm sitz bath may not be effective in reducing pain after hemorrhoidectomy It has been a practice of some people with hemorrhoids to use sitz baths as a form of therapy for their hemorrhoid condition. There are already testimonials that can attest to the effectiveness of the method especially in alleviating pain and inflammation in the affected area. It is usually combined with other forms of medication to achieve better results. The procedure of a sitz bath therapy is not complicated and it can be done at home. There are two types of sitz bath, the hot or warm sitz bath and cold sitz bath which can be used alternately when doing the therapy.

However, in another study, it was revealed that warm sitz bath may not be effective in the treatment of symptoms of post hemorrhoidectomy. The common symptons that is usually felt by a patient after a surgical procedure is pain and bleeding. The main objective of the study is to know whether the use of warm sitz bath can be beneficial in reducing pain and the analgesic requirements after a hemorrhoid surgery.

In a randomized and controlled study of Dr. Pravin J. Gupta, he studied 50 patients who underwent hemorrhoidectomy. He prescribed analgesics and antibiotics to the first group or the controlled group while the sitz bath group was required to perform sitz baths twice daily along with identical antiobiotics and analgesics. The patients were monitored weekly as regards to the effects of the treatment. Weekly pain score and patient satisfaction score were evaluated on visual analogue scores. An assessment of the number of analgesic tablets consumed in each week was also conducted.

Based on the result of the study, there were no significant positive effects that were contributed by the sitz bath to the patients. There was no significant difference in age, gender distribution and the number of excised haemorrhoid piles between the two groups. He also noted that there is no significant difference in postoperative mean pain score between groups (P = 0.234). The study also found out that there are no relevant differences in analgesic requirements between sitz bath and the controlled group (P = 0.435). Although the satisfaction score was higher in the sitz bath group as compared to the group without sitz bath but it was not considered as a statistically significant level.

The conclusion of Dr Gupta states that the administration or inclusion of sitz bath therapy after hemorrhoidectomy does not provide significant benefit to the patient. It does not offer pain relief, wound healing or reduction in consumption of analgesics. He further states that there is no clear evidence to prescribe sitz bath in the post-haemorrhoidectomy period.

Since the study was only focused on the use of sitz bath after surgery, the use of this method in alleviating hemorrhoid symptoms before hemorrhoidectomy is still applicable. Most specialists still offers this procedure to people with piles which are not considered chronic.
