Know the different complications and side effects of hemorrhoid surgeery There are some cases where the hemorrhoids does not respond to home remedies such as the use of herbal treatments or the use of the over the counter creams and ointment. One possible reason is the severity of the condition. Severe cases of hemorrhoids will not be cured by simple treatments and will usually need surgical procedures to totally remove the hemorrhoidal tissues.

However, undergoing surgery whether it is a simple one or a complex operation will generally provide some complications or side effects. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids, you should have a thorough consultation with your health care provider so that every aspect of the surgery will be discussed to you. Some clinics promise instant relief by using other less invasive surgical methods. There re also some who offers lower rates for the operation. But whatever things they promise, always conduct your own research to avoid resentment after the operation. If you have complete information, you will be guided properly when complication arises.

If your doctor already advised you to undergo a surgical procedure to treat the hemorrhoids, you should be prepared. Even if the procedure used is less invasive, the complications are not totally eradicated. Complications vary from mild to severe depending on the outcome of the operation.

Some of the most common complications after hemorrhoid surgery include pain, urinary retention, urinary tract infection, constipation, massive bleeding or hemorrhage, anal itching, anal fissure and many others. The occurrence of these will depend on the skill of the doctor and the overall health of the patient. For older patient, they are more likely to suffer more complications because of the age.

But how can you manage these complications and side effects of having hemorrhoid surgery. If you are suffering from severe pain, your doctor can prescribed opiate pain killers, such as morphine and morphine-like painkillers. To prevent post-operative pain and other side effects like urinary retention, some health experts suggests a direct injection of painkiller to the anal sphincter muscle during surgery.

It is also common that a patient will experience difficulty in urinating. According to studies urinary retention happens to 20% of patients after a hemorrhoid surgery. But this condition is just temporary and usually disappears after a few days. Urinary retention can be caused by spinal anesthesia and fluid overload. In other cases it can be due to rough handling of tissue during surgery and too many hemorrhoid ligations. To address this situation, a catheter can be inserted to the bladder to help urine excretion.

Another possible complication after hemorrhoidectomy is constipation. This condition can be caused by anaesthesia or if the patient has a history of irregular bowel function or difficulty in elimination. The fear of a bowel movement after operation can also contribute to constipation. It can lead to fecal impaction or a condition where the stool becomes dry and hard in the colon. But patients should not worry since your doctor can give you laxatives or require you to take fiber supplements to help you go back to regular and normal bowel movement.

Severe bleeding may also occur after the surgery. It can happen to 2% of the patient undergoing hemorrhoid surgery. This complication is usually associated with lack of skill by the doctor like the improper suturing of the hemorrhoidal tissues during the surgery. Extreme bleeding can also be due to the rupture in suture or infection of the surrounding tissues.

Other complications and side effects can be avoided if your doctor was able to properly diagnose your condition and the appropriate surgical method is used.
