Medical Conditions with Symptoms Similar to Hemorrhoids

Published by admin under Health Information

Symptoms of other colo-rectal conditions can be mistaken for hemorrhoids Sometimes the symptoms of hemorrhoids are similar to other diseases. People who suffer from itching and the burning feeling in the anus are worried because they think it could be a sign of a major health condition when it is actually just a hemorrhoid. These diseases actually belong to four broad categories: anorectal conditions, inflammatory bowel diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and polyps and cancers.

The first kind of diseases, the anorectal condition, has symptoms that are usually mistaken for hemorrhoids. Some of these include fissures, abscesses, and fistulas. A fissure is actually a tear in the skin of the anal canal and is usually from the dentate line to the anal opening. This kind of condition is caused as a result of forcing out a hard stool or as a complication from anal surgery. Some of the symptoms of fissure that are similar to hemorrhoids include pain or burning sensation during and after bowel movements, blood in the stool, swollen tissue and presence of skin tags. And just like hemorrhoids, they also respond well to temporary treatments like warm sitz and analgesic creams in relieving the painful symptoms.

Abscesses on the other hand, are a collection of pus that forms due to the invasion of bacteria. Once fecal materials are trapped in glands found in between the sphincter muscles in the anal canal, a painful, tender, and swollen bulge known as anorectal abscess may form. And lastly, fistula and hemorrhoids also have similar symptoms. This condition happens when the abscesses are not drained and are left untreated. The infection in the abscess grows and tunnels through internal tissue in order to produce a painful external opening. Although painful, anal fissure, abscess and fistula are not life-threatening. However, they still require medical attention by your trusted physician.

Another medical condition with similar symptoms as hemorrhoids is characterized as inflammatory bowel diseases. There are two serious inflammatory bowel diseases known today and they are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. These are due to the inflammation of the digestive tissue and should not be confused with irritable bowel syndrome. The former has symptoms of chronic diarrhea, cramping and weight loss. In this disease, the surface of the colon is inflamed that it bleeds, hence causing blood in the stool, just like in hemorrhoids. The Crohn’s disease on the other hand, occurs when inflammation strikes the digestive organs including the colon and small intestine. Infection can develop and bore through the tissue into other organs.

The third condition that is usually confused to be hemorrhoids is the sexually transmitted disease. These diseases include anal warts, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and herpes. Some of the symptoms of these diseases include itching, bleeding, pain, bleeding and anal discharge.

And lastly, polyps and cancer also have symptoms that are similar to hemorrhoids. A polyp is an abnormal growth on the linings of the intestine and rectum. Polyps usually do not have any symptoms but they are discovered during manual medical examinations and colonoscopy. In some instances, polyps cause rectal bleeding, mucus discharge and a change in bowel habit.

Exercise can do lot of good things to your body. It will help make your body increase stamina or endurance and can help in enhancing your body’s immunity against diseases. The blood flow is improved and the veins are also strengthened with proper exercises.

But a word of caution, you have to choose the type of exercise that is best for your hemorrhoids. Not all exercises can be a good treatment for this condition since some exercise routines can even make the hemorrhoids worst. If you have chosen the wrong exercise regimen, it can cause the hemorrhoids to protrude and extreme pain will follow.

Strenuous exercises are not recommended for people with hemorrhoids as this can aggravate the condition. Trying those equipments in the gym may not be a good idea especially if there is no guidance from a health expert. For example, lifting weights can drive an internal hemorrhoid outside, making it more likely to become “thrombosed” or clogged with clotted blood. Running can also do more harm if you have prolapsed hemorrhoids. Some exercises can irritate the hemorrhoids and add to your discomfort.

Simple exercises will do wonders for your hemorrhoids. As long as you do not involve your self into lifting of heavy weights, you don’t have to worry about the condition. A hemorrhoid sufferer suggested a simple exercise that can be performed once the pain or itching is felt. This can be performed at home.

1. Lie flat on your back the ground. Place your palms flat on the floor.

2. Exhale, lift your buttocks off the floor, and bring your knees to your chest.

3. Raise your hips and buttocks towards the ceiling very slowly.

4. Bend your elbows. Place your hands on your back.

5. Stretch your feet and move your feet away from each other.

6. Breathe normally and hold this position for 5 minutes.

7. Come back to the original sleeping position very slowly.

Doing the appropriate exercises for your hemorrhoid is the best thing to do to avoid taking medications or undergoing surgery. But a consultation with your doctor is still important so that you will be guided on what to do.
